Of the many churches P.J.H. Cuypers designed and built during his long career, this is the oldest survivor. Cuypers designed it by commission of Josephina, baroness van Dorth tot Medler, as a replacement for a church built in 1834. It is a three-aisled cruciform basilican church with a choir with three-sided closure. The tower was a preliminary study for that of the St. Martinus in Maastricht, which was completed two years later. The church was not consecrated until 1867. The interior was completely changed in 1965 and 1970, during waves of modernization. It was closed for services years ago, and has been a museum of religious sculpture since.
