Alphen aan de Maas (G): St. Lambertuskerk (H.W. Valk, 1929-1932)

A tuff Romanesque tower from the 12th century, which is especially noteworthy for the two huge diagonally positioned buttresses that support it, a part of a Gothic choir from ca. 1400 and a piece of wall from ca. 1500 are the remaining parts of a medieval church that originally was devoted to St. Peter Evangelist. In 1910 that church had become to small for the parish, but a plan for an enlargement by architect F. Ludewig was not executed. When almost twenty years later H.W. Valk was commissioned for this job, he replaced most of the old church in a traditionalistic style that shows Gothic influences.
